Have you Ever looked up the Definition of a Good Mom?
Urban Dictionary Definition
What defines a good mom? According to the dictionary a good mom is someone who gives up their life to better their child’s life.
There is some truth behind this statement. This does not mean you forget who you are as a person. Just because you have responsibilities, does not mean you cannot do things to better yourself as well.
This article “What Makes a good Mother Anyway?” (Why what you don’t do matters more than what you do) by Peg Streep
To sum this article up, it says to know your child’s emotions and stay in tune with them at all cost. Do not do everything for your child let them figure things out on their own. By creating boundaries for you and your child you are letting them find out the world around them and you stay in the background.
There is some truth to this article, of course we want what is best for our child but at the same time we can’t spoon feed them for the rest of their life either. We must teach them how to be independent. Teaching them skills to be successful on their own.
Let me get this straight? All I need to do is give up my needs and wants and have my mom hat on all the time and make my child independent and that is a good mom?
We know there is a lot more to it than that. Being a mom is not one definition. It cannot be defined by a text book. Even though these statements have some value to them, we as moms know parenting is complicated. There is no handbook for parenting. Every child is unique in their own way. Everyone who parents has their own way for that particular child.
My definition of a good mom is someone who loves their child unconditionally, who takes care of their basic needs, who is there for them when they need it, who would do anything for their child.
You can read parenting books all day, some of the advice is very helpful but at the end of the day you know your child better than anyone. I am not saying reading parenting books is a waste of time. I read them and sometimes they do give advice on things you didn’t think about or have not tried before.
